Helping our young people maintain healthy friendships

We know friendships are very important to young people, and sometimes these can change and develop over time. For parents, this can be an ideal opportunity to start the conversation about what healthy and unhealthy friendships can look and feel like.

Friendship green flags Friendship red flags
  • You feel safe to be yourself and express your own opinions
  • You can hold boundaries about things you do and don’t like, and this is respected
  • Both people are making an effort to communicate and make plans
  • You feel happy and positive after spending time with them
  • Constant put downs or judgements
  • Not respecting your boundaries
  • Effort feels one sided
  • You feel worse or drained after hanging out with them
  • Sometimes being ignored or not invited to things
  • Obsessive or overly jealous behaviour towards you

If your young person if having friendship issues, these are some questions you can ask to encourage them to reflect on what is happening;

  • What specific actions by my friend are upsetting me?
  • How do those actions make me feel?
  • Deep down, do I still enjoy this friendship?
  • What do I hope will happen next – do I want things to change, or am I looking for closure?

If friendship issues become something that is making your young person feel sad, anxious, or very worried, you can encourage them to speak to any member of the Wellbeing team at school.

Fun Fridays with Wellbeing

Fun Fridays is a lunchtime wellbeing program that gives students the chance to connect with the wellbeing team in a positive and supportive environment. Through fun activities, students can build friendships, strengthen social skills, and enjoy positive experiences with their peers.

We introduced Fun Fridays to help students finish the week on a positive note, especially as Fridays can often be a time when students feel more tired or restless. This term, basketball has been a big hit with our junior students, and next term we look forward to introducing more activities to continue supporting student wellbeing and connection at LSC.
