IDAHOBIT

On Sunday the 17th of May we acknowledge the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) as a day for our communities to go rainbow, and stand up against discrimination. Whether you’re part of the LGTBQIA+ community or you’re an ally – on this day we stand together.

IDAHOBIT has two main purposes; it is an opportunity to celebrate the pride and allyship of the people who have worked to build equality around the world, and also aims to raise awareness of the discrimination LGBTQIA+ people still face today.

Here at LSC we strive to create a place where all our people belong. To acknowledge this important day, we are sharing tips to show kindness and be an ally to our LGTBQIA+ community;

  • Avoid Assumptions – The language we use can imply or assume another person’s identity, particularly when it comes to gender. Using gender neutral language when you don’t know someone’s gender helps to avoid these assumptions.
  • Use Correct Pronouns – Pronouns are the words we often use in place of someone’s name, such as he/him, she/her or they/them.
  • Stand up for LGBTQIA+ people when others don’t respect them. This includes speaking up when you see discrimination occur, even if the person being talked about isn’t around.
  • Build inclusion in your everyday life, and advocate for others to do the same.

IDAHOBIT is coordinated by Minus18, Australia’s charity for LGBTQIA+ young people across the country. You can find out more about the day, and discover information about identity and inclusion through the website www.IDAHOBIT.org.au.
