Overview

Studies in English as an Additional Language aim to develop and extend a student’s language competencies in reading, writing, speaking and listening. At this level, students are beginning to explore and respond to more complex ideas and issues through reading and viewing a wide range of texts.

Texts to be studied may include plays, news articles, short story collections, poetry anthologies, novels and film texts. Responses to texts will be required both in writing and verbally, at different points in each unit.

In English as an Additional Language, students study the effect of audience and purpose on texts and start to apply this knowledge when constructing appropriate written and spoken texts of their own. Emphasis is also placed on development of skills and work habits that will assist students in future studies.
